Many different problems can affect our eyes. One of the most commonly overlooked is dry eye. This is because many of the people who suffer from this condition don’t realize that they are suffering from a very real eye problem that can be treated effectively, lessening or eliminating the symptoms that you experience.

Dry eye doesn’t sound serious, but it can make life unpleasant and more difficult than it needs to be for people who suffer from the condition. Some of the most common symptoms of dry eye include sore, itchy eyes, feeling as though there is a foreign body in your eye, grittiness or irritation, redness, blurred vision, and sensitivity to light. Exactly what causes dry eye can vary, from problems with the glands that provide tear film for the eyes to chronic inflammation.

Fortunately, there is a range of treatments that can be used to provide relief from the symptoms of dry eye. One of the newest and most innovative is known as Prokera, which can be used to treat a range of different eye conditions, including dry eye.

What is Prokera?

Prokera is the only therapeutic device with amniotic tissue that has been approved by the FDA for wound healing. The amniotic tissue is cryopreserved, donated by consenting mothers who have been tested against infectious diseases before donation. The tissue has also been through multiple quality-control tests before being provided to your doctor.

Prokera is actually a contact lens that is designed specifically with healing properties. The amniotic membrane is inserted between two rings made out of a clear, flexible material placed into the eyes. Some people refer to Prokera as a corneal bandage, as that is essentially how it works. Placed into the eye, Prokera has natural anti-inflammatory and anti-scarring properties that speed up the rate at which the surface of the eye heals. This results in a strong, healthy cornea that facilitates clear vision.

Patients may start to see an improvement in their dry eye symptoms as quickly as three days after the Prokera lenses are placed, and the benefits can last up to five months before further treatment is required.

Taking care of your eyes while wearing Prokera

Your eye doctor will give you specific instructions for looking after your eyes when wearing Prokera. These must be followed so that you don’t experience any complications and achieve the best possible result from the treatment. Some of the advice that you will be given will include:

  • Avoiding rubbing your eyes, so that you don’t accidentally move your Prokera lenses.

  • Not touching your eyes with your fingers so that you do not transfer harmful microorganisms to your eyes or move your lenses.

  • Not swimming while wearing your lenses.

  • Not soaking your face with water.

  • Using the eye drops or other medications prescribed by your eye doctor.
