Importance of UV Protection

From a young age, you've been made aware of how ultraviolet (UV) light can cause sunburn and skin cancer. But did you know that your eyes are in danger, too? Studies have established the link between prolonged sun exposure and eye diseases. If you're still not convinced why you should avoid going out without proper eye protection from UV rays, here are a couple of things you need to know:

  • It Prevents Eye Damage. Your eyes are sensitive to UV light, not only when the sun is shining bright but even in the shade, too. The radiation is also harmful at noon when the sun is at its strongest but all day, every day. Sun radiation can be as high as 70 to 75 percent on the ground, even on a cloudy day. This is possible because of reflection and dispersion. Concrete roads reflect about 12 percent of UV radiation, while bodies of water like a lake reflect as much as 20 percent. Sand reflects approximately 25 percent of radiation and fresh snow, as high as 88 percent. Without UV protection, you could develop eye diseases like conjunctivitis, photokeratitis, cataracts, and macular degeneration. You may also end up damaging your eyelids and the delicate skin around your eyes.

  • Children Are Most at Risk. Did you know that kids are more sensitive to UV radiation than adults? You receive 80 percent of a lifetime's worth of exposure to these harmful rays before you turn 18. For this reason, everyone must develop good eye protection habits from a young age. Damage from UV light is cumulative throughout your lifetime. That's why it's especially vital to ensure that kids and teens have adequate UV protection. For children, extended periods outdoors during summer are prime times for increased UV radiation exposure. For adults, engaging in outdoor activities like marathons can be dangerous to your eyes.

How to Protect Your Eyes

To provide adequate protection for your eyes, you need a pair of eyewear that blocks out 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B rays. As much as possible, opt for lenses that screen out at least 75 percent of visible light. Additionally, choose the ones that are free of distortion or any imperfection. Not all sunglasses come with UV protection. So, your prescription eyewear must be equipped with this special coating.

If you engage in sports or have an outdoor occupation that is potentially eye-hazardous, select a pair made from impact-resistant materials like polycarbonate. If you can't avoid spending time outdoors in bright sunlight for an extended period, choose sunglasses with large or wraparound frames. This will give you extra protection from sun damage.

Overexposure to the sun's rays can damage your cornea and lenses. Without adequate UV protection, you increase your risk of certain eye and visual health problems. That's why you must take a proactive approach when going out during the day. Do you need help in shopping for the best pair of glasses?
