According to a survey conducted by the Vision Council in 2015, about 65 percent of adults in the U.S. had experienced CVS.


Although using such devices is almost unavoidable in these digitally-oriented times, there are a few things you can do to prevent digital eyestrain. Here is a look at some of them.




Exercising Your Eyes



This is one of the most effective ways to ensure your eye health is well maintained. The 20-20-20 rule is commonly applied to avoid digital eye strain. The rule dictates that you take a 20-second break and look at an object 20 feet away for every 20 minutes you are using a digital device. This exercise helps your eyes hone their focusing ability without locking up.




Better Computer Display



If you are still using a CRT monitor on your computer, you need to get an upgrade. You should get a flat-panel LCD display to help reduce the risk of developing CVS. Noticeable flickering of images on CRT displays makes your eyes strain. However, this is not a problem with LCD monitors. Experts recommend an LCD display measuring at least 19 inches diagonally.




Improve Your Lighting



When you use excessive bright light on your device, it can lead to digital eyestrain. Additionally, the light surrounding your environment when using your computer should not be too bright. For instance, many computer users find their eyes are more comfortable if they switch off their fluorescent lights when using a computer.




Improve Your Blinking



Sufficient blinking helps keep your vision at an optimal level. Blinking more moistens your eyes, preventing irritation and dryness in your eyes. When using a computer, you should make an effort to blink more to avoid the risk of CVS. 


During a prolonged non-blinking period, the tears that coat your eyes tend to evaporate more rapidly. Experts recommend slowly blinking at least ten times for every 20 minutes you are on the computer.




Regular Eye Exams



A comprehensive eye exam on a regular basis is essential to your overall eye health. It is among the most important steps you can take to prevent CVS. It is important to be forthcoming to your eye doctor about how long you use your computer. 


If you can estimate the distance between you and the computer display when using it, it would be a big plus for your eye doctor. This allows your optometrist to test your vision at that particular distance to see if there is any impairment.




Taking a Break



If you are experiencing shoulder, back, and neck pains, it could also signify that you are suffering from CVS. Take a step away from your workstation routinely to prevent CVS. Move around, stretch your neck, back, legs, arms, and shoulders once in a while.
